How to Clean and Store Patio Furniture for a Calgary Winter

September in Calgary is your last honest window for backyard work. The chinooks will roll in soon, and furniture that stays outside through an Alberta winter ages about five years in five months. Plastic cracks, wicker unravels, metal rusts, and cushion foam soaks up moisture it will never fully release. The good news: one afternoon of cleaning and smart storage saves hundreds of dollars next spring.

What a Calgary winter actually does to patio furniture

Our climate is uniquely brutal for outdoor furniture, for three reasons:

Freeze-thaw swings. A chinook in January can push temperatures from -20°C to +10°C in a day — and back down overnight. Water trapped in cushions, frame joints, or wicker weave expands and contracts until material splits.
Dry cold + wind. Southern Alberta's dry air and gusty chinook winds fade finishes and crack vinyl straps.
Melt-freeze slush. Snow that thaws on a chinook Wednesday and refreezes Friday finds every seam — that's how rust spots and mildew start under covers.

Step 1: Clean by material
